Navigating the Highs and Lows: The Challenges of Running a Seasonal Business in the PNW

Running a small business in the Pacific Northwest is a unique adventure, especially when you’re operating a place like DiG PDX, Oregon’s largest indoor sandbox. The weather here changes with each season, and with it, the flow of our little visitors changes dramatically.

Our Construction themed sandbox

During those endless rainy and cold days, our sandboxes are bustling with energy, laughter, and yes, quite the crowd! It's when our space transforms into a haven for families seeking shelter from the drizzle, a place where children can burn off energy while parents take a breather. We love these days; the buzz and excitement are what make us thrive. However, it also means managing long lines and busy sand boxes, often juggling a waitlist to ensure everyone has a fair chance to join the fun.

But when the sun decides to make an appearance, everything changes. The once packed sand boxes become eerily quiet as families opt for outdoor adventures, soaking up the precious rays of sunshine. For a small business like ours, these sunny spells can be challenging. The sudden dip in foot traffic can feel like a storm of its own, reminding us how deeply our livelihood is tied to the whims of the weather.

What We Do During the Low Season

Spring and summer are our low seasons at DiG PDX, and we’ve learned to embrace the quieter days as an opportunity to innovate and plan ahead. Here’s how we make the most of it:

  1. Historical Data Analysis: We carefully review historical data and weekly temperature averages to estimate demand and plan accordingly. This helps us anticipate trends and prepare for varying levels of foot traffic.

  2. Afternoon Events: We schedule special afternoon events to attract families looking for a fun escape from the heat. These events often include themed activities and more to keep our space lively and engaging.

  3. Summer Specials: To encourage visits, we offer amazing summer deals, such as our $14 admission all summer long! This special rate makes it easier for families to enjoy a day of play, even during the sunnier months.

  4. Adjusted Hours: We also adjust our hours to better suit the seasonal flow. We’re currently closed on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

How You Can Support Us

Supporting small businesses like DiG PDX is crucial, regardless of the forecast. Your support means the world to us and helps us keep the magic alive for those rainy day surges and sunny day lulls. Here’s how you can make a difference:

  1. Leave a Review: Share your experiences on platforms like Google or Yelp. Positive reviews not only boost our spirits but also help other families find us.

  2. Engage on Social Media: A like, comment, or share on our posts helps spread the word and keeps our community engaged and informed.

  3. Visit on a Sunny Day: Even when the weather is beautiful outside, consider stopping by. Our playground offers a unique indoor experience that complements any day.

  4. Buy a Gift Card: It’s a wonderful way to support us while giving the gift of play to a friend or family member.

  5. Tell a Friend: Word of mouth is powerful. Let your friends and family know about the fun and joy we offer, rain or shine.

By supporting us through all kinds of weather, you help us maintain a vibrant space where children can play and grow, no matter what the sky decides. So next time you see the forecast, think of DiG PDX and remember: we’re here, ready to welcome you, come rain or shine.

Thank you for being a part of our community and for supporting small businesses like ours. Your support means everything to us!

Welcome to Sandpaper: a DIG PDX Blog

Welcome to Sandpaper, the blog of DiG PDX! I'm Bettie, owner of Dig PDX - Oregon’s largest indoor sandbox, and a mom of two little ones. Currently, I call Lake Oswego home, but my journey here was anything but straightforward.

Originally from Sweden, I spent years in the tech scene of the Bay Area, California, before moving closer to family here in the PNW.

Apart from running DiG PDX, I also own LEKA Playland in Tigard, Oregon. It's a beautiful boutique indoor play space for kids 0-5, unlike anything else out there. With its unique toys and charming atmosphere, people often describe it as a Pinterest board coming to life. Check it out!

DiG started with my youngest son's obsession with construction vehicles. That passion inspired me to daydream about a place where kids could play with sand and every construction vehicle under the sun to their heart's content.

When I first floated the idea of an indoor sandbox to my husband and friends, they thought I was nuts. But the idea stuck with me, and the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. So, I took the plunge, and here we are!

Join me on Sandpaper as I dive into the sandy world of DiG PDX!
